Looming over Squamish is the mighty Stawamus Chief, straight
ahead. In a couple hours I will be at the top of the middle section, also
known as Peak #2. |
I'm planning on taking the trail up, but there are plenty
of crazy people who simply climb the face of the Chief. These three pictures
should give you a bit of an idea of... |
the size...
of the rock...
The climbing begins right away with a steep and seemingly
endless set of steps. If you can survive the first ten minutes, you will
probably surive the rest of the hike fine. |
Ten minutes into the hike and I am already exhausted. |
Fortunately, there is a lovely spot to cool off. |
Ahhh, much better! |
Halfway up I contemplated taking the quick way down until
I realized that I forgot to pack my parachute... |
A rare flat portion of the trail. Here I ignore the trail
heading to peak #1 and strive forward to the second peak. |
Lots of rocks and trees as I near the top... |
A steep climb up ahead and I will climb out of the shadows
and back into the sunlight. A series of chains are bolted into the rock
to help people climb the last portions. |
There's even a ladder to finish off the final climb into
daylight. |
Voila, up on the top and into the scorching sun. How
do these trees grow out of solid rock? |
Ooooh, all this hard climbing! |
I stand at the edge of the great precipice, taking in
the marvelous view... |
